Vixar extends its line of 940nm VCSELs

As part of Vixar’s commitment to serving the rapidly growing industrial and consumer sensor market, we are pleased to announce expansion of our 940nm VCSEL product line. The products are suitable for spectroscopic sensing, IR illumination, structured illumination and time of flight (TOF) sensors for 3D sensing and imaging and gesture recognition. The product line consists of multiple chip designs ranging from single mode, multi-mode and arrays emitting up to 4W of optical power. The 940nm wavelength is compatible with low cost silicon photodiodes while also reducing the visibility of the beam for unobtrusive sensing.

Performance, reliability and manufacturability are intrinsic to the designs, and are being produced on a high volume manufacturing line capability of producing 10’s of millions of units per month.

VCSELs provide advantages over both Light Emitting Diodes and conventional lasers in terms of their speed (for TOF applications), narrow spectrum (for compatibility with filters used to reduce the effect of ambient light) and compact packaging.

Vixar’s 940nm VCSEL designs are available in a variety of packaging options, including surface mount packages, chip on submount, and TO-can packaging, and can also be combined with optical elements such as diffusers or diffractive optical elements (DOEs).

Laser World of Photonics

June 26-29, 2017: Munich, Germany: Vixar will be exhibiting at the Laser World of Photonics trade show to be held at the Messe in Munich German. Vixar designs, develops, and manufactures short wavelength (670nm to 1000nm) Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) for consumer, industrial and medical applications. Plymouth, MN: Vixar announces a family of high power Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL)arrays targeting consumer, medical, industrial and automotive applications. Samples are available at both the 850nm and 680nm wavelengths and are optimized for output power ranging from 50mW to 10W.

Applications include 3D scanning, gesture recognition sensors, IR illumination for security systems, medical scanning and medical low light laser therapy. The VCSEL arrays combine high power, high energy efficiency, narrow spectral width, narrow beam divergence, low speckle, and high-reliability characteristics into a single miniaturized light source. Custom die layout, packaging, and integration with optical elements such as diffusers or lenses can be tailored to the customer’s application.

Vixar Raises $2.5M in Series B Funding from Phoenix Venture Partners

Plymouth, MN: Vixar, a supplier of high performance, energy efficient, optoelectronic components and subassemblies, raised $2.5M in Series B financing from Phoenix Venture Partners (PVP).

Vixar specializes in components and custom subassemblies of a type of semiconductor laser known as a VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser). These devices enable miniaturization and improved energy efficiency for wireless industrial and medical sensors, the reduction in size and cost of medical diagnostic equipment for personalized medicine, and higher speed, lower cost links for consumer-based networks and equipment. The Series B funding allows Vixar to put in place the personnel and processes required for expanding our strategic partnerships, customers, and scaling our production capability.

NSF awards Vixar a Phase I SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) contract to develop a 40-100Gbps VCSEL

The NSF has awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract to demonstrate the feasibility of a Composite Resonator VCSEL (CRVCL) achieving a 40-100Gbps serial data transmission rate. The continued rapid increase in Internet bandwidth demand requires higher speed data links at all distances, including within and between cabinets in servers and high performance computing, and even between and on boards within a cabinet. VCSELs have been the engine driving bandwidth increases at shorter distances (<300 meters) for more than a decade, but it appears that conventional VCSEL technology may be running out of steam somewhere between 20 and 30Gbps. Straightforward design enhancement of conventional VCSELs will not satisfy the requirements. The novelty of the design proposed in this project has been validated by the allowance of claims in our patent application. The approach avoids relaxation oscillation limitations on modulation speed through the use of a dual cavity VCSEL operated in a push-pull configuration. The goals of the Phase I project are to fabricate a CRVCL, demonstrate the push-pull nature of the modulation to a minimum of 20GHz, and demonstrate the elimination or dramatic reduction in relaxation oscillations.

In addition to allowing continued expansion of bandwidth in Storage Area Networks or High Performance Computing, a 40Gbps+ VCSEL will be essential for the development of optical interconnects within a cabinet or circuit board. Copper based interconnects are increasingly the limiting factor in system performance due to their size and power consumption, but the replacement by optical interconnects will require high speed per channel (40Gbps), very low power, high reliability, and low cost. Vixar’s concept addresses all four considerations. Higher speed devices feeds the bandwidth expansion allowing the continued improvements in business productivity, management of medical information, and entertainment options we have come to expect, and helps maintain the U.S. competitiveness and employment in the networking market. The reduction in power consumption helps achieve the industry and government goals for reducing the power consumption of data centers. Vixar personnel have a long history of commercializing VCSEL component technology and have already identified potential commercialization partners for a high-speed VCSEL.
